How do I stay focused when studying for an exam?

I've been studying a PhD for 2 years.now they want me to take the masters exam.Should I stay or should I go?

  • I've been here for 2 years. When I applied they told me I could switch within the same department to a different area. Now that I want to switch, they say it is not possible without me taking the master exam (a 200 books reading list!!! no kidding). I already have a master. Should I take the exam anyways or should I have pride and send them to hell? Should I stay or should I go? I am 29 and this will take me at least one more year... Should I waste my youth in this PhD? I'll be 33 when I finish...

  • Answer:

Looks like your Masters is in a different subject, that the PhD that you are doing. One reason that can ask you to do a Masters is to cover any deficits, specially if your earlier masters is in a different area. Getting an additional masters is not a bad thing - if it does not extend your PhD. 2 masters means, in case you dont want to complete your PhD, then you have a wider field to look for a job. As for doing a PhD itself, thats your personal choice. If you are looking for jobs, and need the money right away, perhaps a PhD is not all that essential. However, if you want to be in the research area, or want to specialize in a specific area, or are interested in teaching, then PhD is a must. I agree, 33 yrs to come out of school is a bit too late, but hey, if thats what you want, you should go for it. In any case, 'pride' should not come in the way, at this time. Pride is momentary, but a career decision is certainly not. But I do suggest you talk to the dean of your school clearly. I am not sure, why they have this bait and switch attitude - why are they asking you to take the masters exam. Maybe they have a 'valid' reason, but I suggest you should find that out.

Try and appeal this. Look into requirements for Ph.D. If it's in writing, find out if it was written before or after you you began. Have you already written your thesis? If you meet the credentials they have to give you the degree. My brother got his Ph.D at Rutger's University in N.J. He never got a Master's degree. Now he works at the University of Pittsburgh -- he teaches, travels all over the world to give speeches (they didn't care that he had no Masters) His thesis was on crystallography.

Is the exam a REQUIREMENT? My Mom has some pride for you. R.N., M.D., Allied Health Services four year, PhD in English Literature and now on a roll for Medieval Studies Master. If you can smoke em' and don't want another master's do that. I think my Mom seeks titles. She's not pretentious either. She just likes school. I stopped with two. I am human, man! Good luck!

So it will be 4 years and you will get your PhD. If you give up, in 4 years, what will you have? Can you get a job in your field without a PhD? Will you be happy with out it? After 2 years, why did you decide to change? Is this not adding on to your time anyhow. Even without a change, you are talking 5 years for a PhD, why so long?

go for it, I will be 29 when I get my doctorate degree, I am 26 now. you are never too old to be a doctor, not too many people can say they are a 100% ligit doctor, but what kind of PhD are you getting in the first place, the more education that you get the better, I will be going for my diplomacy after I finish, thats another 5 years. the more education you get the more money you make. and the more money you owe too, for that matter.

Hey ,take my suggestion go in for a job. And side by side do some courses that could enhance ur skills. If u r from lifesciences than do follow this and for the side courses, make sure they are about techniques involved. This way u will start earning also. And not to bother about that phd for, after that also u will be stuck with the same Q' "What Next?" Best of luck. All this is considering ur delima that u wish to switch and r running out of .....
