Should I go to Sixth form or college?

Should I go to sixth form or college after GCSE?

  • My school has a built sixth form. And the sixth form is closest. Which is leading me towards sixth form, plus they offer the courses I want to do. But college is appealing because they treat you more of an adult there and there are dedicated places for art (which is what I want to study.) But also my brother went to college and he's now working in a werehouse. Where as my sister went to sixth form and is now a teacher ... I'm still not sure though. What benefits are there for both?

  • Answer:

Go sixth form! In college they tend to just leave you do to the work no guidance, whereas in 6th form they push to achieve the best and they guide and help you with decisions.

Ah yeah I had an interview with Conexxions and they told me that if I wanted more support etc. that I should go to Sixth form but if I wanted to be more independent then I should go to college. Because obviously they want you to get on in college but in 6th form they will give you that extra support, usually the classes and groups will be smaller so if you like it that way you should go there. But for me I'm leaving Y11 soon as well and I definitely want to go to college I want the experience of doing different things than school. Also colleges usually have more to offer. =) & Not a lot of 6th forms offer all the subjects I want to do. Personally I'd pick a place which offers the subjects I want to do and then choose between the college or 6th form. Anyways good luck with it!

i faced this problem a while ago... to go to sixth form, or to go to college, which to do? Well, i looked at it this way. Although college treats you more as an adult, they don't push you as they would in a sixth form. You only have a few lessons a week, and it makes your days less structured. Sixth form gives you more academic stability and will also most probably get you better A level results.... But it depends on you.... I didn't go to college cos I knew that if I went to college, I would just slip back and not work at all... But we're all different so you need to choose. Think about both carefully and weigh up the pros and cons before you choose :)

I always believe that college is the better option because it always looks much better while applying for a job and there is a much wider range of courses. Especially if you want to do photography, that is quite a specialised course but i know for a fact that a lot of art and design colleges do A levels in it, and they tend to have a higher pass rate than sixth forms hope i helped :D

At sixth form it's more likely that you'll still be able to be with old friends and not have to travel far, whereas in college you can make new friends and get away from the school experience. Plus if you really want to do photography then college looks like the best option. :) x

I would say go to college. That's what I did (I hated my school) and I really enjoyed it. It doesn't feel like school anymore. People are there because they want to learn and yes, you do get treated like an adult. I went to college and I don't work in a warehouse (I'm training to be a clinical psychologist!)

I asked the same question yr ago. College is more for mature student, theres no playground or anything, just inside halls, there are alot of older students in college, where as in school only till 16-17. i probably prefer college it more chill out for me, a breaks you can go to town or where ever . plus it dosnt feel like school as evryone has normal clothes on and no uniform

I would go to college. 6th form is boring just like being at school again. College there are more course choices, more activities and generally more stuff going on and new people to meet. You will have a blast

If you like school, stay in school. I don't like school but I stayed on for sixth form anyway now I want to leave because its hard work and I couldn't be bothered doing it!!

My sixth form did a fairly good job at treating me like an adult, teachers that have treated you like a kid for 5 years may start treating you different. I notice a lot of people saying they went to college because they wanted to get out of the school environment, but they probably never went to sixth form. You are still surrounded by people who want to be there and not in uniform at a sixth form. Ok so not doing your work or turning up very often is more likely to result in consequences but this isn't a bad thing, and it is not like they will give you a detention like you're 14. Generally speaking sixth forms tend to get better results (I think it is down to higher expectations because of brighter students doing mostly academic subjects and better teaching). Look at the average results from the local college and from the sixth form (they have to publish them for each subject). Some colleges are actually pretty good despite what I said. The thing is studying art makes it hard to get a career, studying art alongside one or two academic subjects at A-level will make you more attractive to employers and universities, possibly even in the artistic sector as it proves a level of general intelligence. College probably does give you more independance, but sixth form isn't the same as year 11 by any means. Better results are what count more than anything. Besides you are still a child, you have plenty of time to learn independance.
