What would be the right career for me?

What career/ field of study is right for me?

  • I don't know what I want to do with my life. I'm only 15 years old, but I am completly lost when I think about my future. I know I am young, but I feel like I need to have some sort of a plan, or goal in mind. I want to know what I can do NOW to prepare for my future. I get good grades in school; Academics are my main priority. I am not very good at math, but I understand science very well. I am also very talented in music and art. Some career paths I have considered: Business (particularly entrepenuership), Medicine, Architechture, and Music. I can handle going to school for a long time. And I know I want a career that will make me the most money. I want a stable career as well. Any suggestions on careers I may be interested in? What should I study?

  • Answer:

I believe computational science is about to explode. http://www.njit.edu/features/sceneandheard/bs-computationalsciences.php Those on the ground floor could have the opportunity for some really great jobs. If you like medicine computational biology could be a good choice and probability also an excellent preparation for a medical career should you decide on that. If business is your thing then think about computational mathematics with a minor in finance/business. I wouldn't worry too much about not being very good at math - as long as you are OK you should be fine. As the link says graduates from this are hotly sought after by wall street. Get a post grad qual in finance and you should be well set for a good stable career in business - if that is the direction you want to go. Just some thoughts anyway - if math is a big turn off then something else may be better. But regarless you need to decide on colleges you mght like to attend: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/30/educat... The sort of college I like is Wooster college, or something similar: http://www.wooster.edu/ http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/se... Acceptance rate: 75 percent. The mantra of the liberal arts college: Think hard and critically. To prove that students have developed that skill, each must complete an independent study project, with one-on-one guidance by a faculty member. This could be a written work, performance or art exhibit. Sitting in the middle of cornfields here, distractions from studies are few — except maybe dreaming about a road trip to Cleveland nightspots. High academic standards that will give you a very good education, but you don't have to really push yourself to get in. They aloso provide quite good post grad pathways.: http://academics.wooster.edu/pre-professional.php And they do try hard to make it affordable: http://www.wooster.edu/financialaid/ For other possible choices check out. http://www.collegeboard.com/student/csea... My suggestion is choose a college that looks like it would be a good fit and start a dialogue now. In my experience colleges really like it when you show an interest. That way you can target what you do to what they require. For example Pitzer doesn't worry about SAT's so if you want to go there (and it is one of the best schools in the US) then even sitting the sats is a waste of time. To ensure you get into somewhere else if you can't get into Pitzer it is wise to still sit them - but I am sure you get my drift ie don't concentrate on it. Best of luck. Thanks Bill
