What do I need to do to get into a good college?

Hi! I'm currently in 7th grade, and I would like to get into a good college. What do I need to do to get in? My dad says that I should aim for Community Colleges because of our family's economic situation. I want to prove him wrong. Yes, it's a very far-fetched dream, but I'm the type who never gives up. As for my grades/classes, I have advance on every academic class except science, and I make all A's with the occasional B/B+. Futhermore, I'm being recommended to have carnegie classes. I believe it's all academic classes, Band, Computer Applications I, or Business Essentials. By the way, carnegie classes are high school credit classes. In addition, I play the trumpet. I've made Distric Honor Band and All-County Band. Help?

Answer:
Glad you're aiming high! Colleges only look at what you have done in high school first of all; so no junior high stuff will count. also, it's really tough to say what kind of factors will lead someone into a "good college." Also, if you study hard in high school and take AP, IB, and/or honors, and keep up really good grades, then you might even get full scholarships to colleges. LIke I said, it's really tough to figure out how someone can get into a good college. I'm a high school senior now, and some of the top students at my school didn't get into the competitive schools this year. For instance, nobody got into Stanford in our school this year, and only one person at our school was wait-listed for Harvard. research some schools by going onto the college websites.. & if you're worried about money, you and parents will be able to apply for financial aid later on. as i said earlier, research on college websites! also, when you apply for colleges during your senior year, you'll probably be investing in a lot of money just for paying application fees alone. get as many fee waivers/reductions as you can in high school. (examples: free/reduced lunches). stuff like this will help you get so many other waivers later on!) with this in mind, high school counselors should be able to give you stuff like waivers for SATs and other high school exams. this will indicate to colleges later on that you'll need application fee waivers and maybe even greater financial aid during college. sorry i'm rambling, and i could go on and on, but i guess i'll stop here. good luck on your college endeavors!
