Is it easy to find a job as a lawyer after law school?

Is law school even worth it?

  • Everyone in my family agrees I should become a lawyer, including myself. I want to attend Harvard Law School and work in criminal or civil law in a firm and later open my own practice. With so many lawyers out there I'm afraid I won't find a job. I'm in high school so by the time I finish law school it'll be 2021( crazy!) so do you think the demand will change? I don't care about the money as long as I get paid .

    Yes, the demand will change. The legal profession hit a slump in the early 1990's, built itself back up again, and then hit another recession and now it's worse then ever. So you can't really predict the situation in 2021. The great part about law school it, there are no college prerequisites; any academic major is acceptable for admittance. So in college you can prepare for any non-law degree you want, to fall back on if the market for lawyers isn't good when you graduate. I particularly suggest engineering; not only is it one of the most marketable majors straight out of school, but it also makes you eligible, as an attorney, to sit for the patent bar, opening up a lucrative field of law that is closed to most attorneys.

If you can get into HLS, you're not going to have much of a problem getting a job. The problem is the proliferation of medium - low quality law schools. In the 1990s, only 8 new law schools got ABA approval. In the 2000s there were 16. Some regions are so saturated and have so many law schools that some of them can't even reach their enrollment targets. But there's still demand for graduates from top law schools like Harvard. As for the money, when you have $150,000 in student loan debt that you need to pay off, you will care about the money.
