Vet Tech to Zookeeper?

Which is best? Vet Tech Institute of Houston? Or Penn Foster's Online Vet Tech Program?

  • I'm a certified vet assistant trying to get certified for my vet tech license, and i'm wondering the pros and cons of each of these programs. I know that Penn Foster has a cheaper payment plan, and a bit cheaper in general, but The Vet Tech Institute of Houston is all the way across town from me, and since classes start at 7am, i'd be battling rush hour to get there. I know a pro to going to the Vet Tech Institute is that its an actual class with hands on learning, and that's what I really like, but is it worth losing the convenience of not having to battle traffic Mon-Fri whereas with Penn Foster is online and self paced? But then if I went that route, I may not learn as well... What do you think?

  • Answer:

I would highly recommend that you go to the on-site program rather than doing it online if at all possible. While on-line programs do require hands on experience under the mentorship of a credentialed technician or a licensed veterinarian, that is not a guarantee that your mentor is showing you how to do things in the best way. Most people tend to get a little lax after they finish school and get out in the real world. At the on-site program you will be shown the very best methods and most scrupulous methods. Also, just an FYI you will not be licensed as a veterinary technician in Texas. The Texas Veterinary Medical Association registers technicians. It is in the works to try to push for licensure of technicians in Texas, but it won't occur in the next year or two. ;) I would recommend that you consider joining the Texas Assoc. of Registered Veterinary Technicians as that group directly represents veterinary technicians and CVA's to the Texas Veterinary Medical Assocation Technician Oversight Committee. TARVT also is involved in getting free or discount continuing education for it's members. And despite what the name implies, you can be a member even if you aren't a Registered Veterinary Technician. Check out the website at: www.tarvt.org Once you are enrolled in school, you can be a member free.
