How can I get research experience outside the college setting?

Is it possible to get into medical school without any volunteering or research experience AT ALL?

  • Say that you have to work in order to pay for college, and you absolutely cannot take out a loan because you are underage, so you do not have time for anything other than classes and work. Finding a medical-related job is hard, so you end up working at your college's library, and have a second job at a fast-food place because no one will hire an underage person to work as a technician/medical receptionist or anything in the medical field. Is it possible to get into a medical school (doesn't have to be the top ones, just any!) if you don't have any medical-related extracurricular activities, and don't have any volunteer hours at all? What if you have a 40 MCAT and a 3.7+GPA? :(

  • Answer:

Yes, GPA and MCAT scores together trump all secondary considerations.

Of course it's possible! Volunteering/research experience will increase your chances, but not doing either will not completely eliminate your chances of acceptance. Congrats on the 40 MCAT, that's really good.
