Does it look bad to Grad schools when you went to a community college your first 2 years?
-
I am thinking of starting college at a community college for financial reasons and then transferring to the University of Virgina... does this look bad to admissions officers at elite graduate schools or does it even matter where you started at? also... does starting at a community college look bad on your record if you want to later get a job as a professor? Thanks!

Answer:
I asked the same question when I started community college 3 years ago. My Honors100 instructor informed us that it actually helps students gain acceptance. Basically it shows preserverance through hardships. It shows you are willing to work through from bottom to top. Some community colleges have a direct contract w/ the higher universities which garentee aceptance which is also good such as in Washington State. So Yes. Also as others stated, many professionals especially instructors began their studies at community colleges and went on to the more prestigous universities. The community college cares about you having a HS diploma. When you go for your BA, BS, etc ... they care about you having a AA/AS.... and so on.... Basically... All that matters in the end is the last school. So go 4 it... and good luck!

It wouldn't matter as long as you keep your grades up - however, if you want to go to grad school, there's not much chance that two years at community college will help much. Most college majors that later lead to grad school require four years of studying in that major, and I know that community colleges don't offer even second-year level courses in those fields. So it probably won't look bad, but you may be handicapping yourself and end up spending longer in college making up the credits and courses. Look into that before making a descision.

actually what grad schools look at most is your last 60 hrs...meaning jr and sr years. this is when you get into the 300 and 400 level classes of your major that are often seminars and most closely resemble grad classes. i went to a community college for a year, then transferred to purdue university, where i got my BA. right after i got my BA i went on and now i'm finishing up my MA at seton hall. it really depends on what you mean by "elite" as well. some people focus on schools close to cities where they can make some good contacts and do some decent intern work. other are focused on research and go to schools that are more focused on that. depends if you are getting a master's or phd as well. master's programs are easier to get into than phd programs. but if you get a decent gpa from virginia, say 3.5 and up, and do well on your GRE/GMAT or whatever test you're taking, then you got an excellent chance at getting into grad school.

doesn't really matter. colleges understand that students have their own personal reasons for going to community college. focus on maintaining your grade so you can transfer to the college of your choice. most important thing is where you graduated last.

They won't care about that because they are looking at your most recent transcript. Start at community college and save your money. I would say that a lot of professors start out this way. I think it is a very smart financial decision to go to community college first. I recommend to anyone thinking about going to college.

No it does not look bad since the most recent upper level courses are weighed the heaviest. The only problem that you may experience is that CC's generally are not as rigorous as 4 year institutions and if you are pursuing a difficult major you may not develop all the skills necessary. For example my major was mathematics and the calculus 1, 2 &3 that I took at my CC were not as rigorous as the classes other beginning math majors were taking at the 4 year university. In the 4 year University I had to spend much much more time reviewing and bringing myself up to speed while taking the more advanced classes and it took me an additional 3 years to finish instead of the expected 2. In my situation, considering the extra time and aggravation, I lost the money saved by going to CC.

No, attending a community college does not work against you. What is important is how well you do overall in your major. I attended a community college, earned my B.A. and M.A. from State universities. I then earned my doctorate from a UC. Go for it and do your best!

Not at all. Just do well at your current university.

No, heres why. First, it usually is a financial reason (unless you just aren't college material...but then why would you go to grad school?) and that shows responsibility. Second, once you declare a major at the U of V, you'll be taking harder classes in the core curriculum, not just GECs, so the grades you earn there will prove if you are grad school material. The first 2 years of undergrad are usually spent taking GECs anyway, so doing it at a CC and saving money is good. Just be sure to be able to write one heck of an admissions essay :)
