What does it take to become a homicide detective?

Top colleges to become a homicide detective ?

  • I want to become a homicide detective but I'm not sure what are the top colleges to attend and what classes to do they look at based on grades. Any information would be a great help!

  • Answer:

I'm not sure about specific colleges for that particular major, but here is a website for US colleges and universities: www.utexas.edu/world/univ And perhaps wikipedia.org has some info on forensic science albeit not the most reliable source but with some additional resources listed. Just type into seach 'forensic science'. Good luck!

I think you become a detective by advancing in employment in the police department. The only detective I know advanced to the job that way. Please don't take this as discouraging, but I want you to know that homicide work is unbelievably depressing and gruesome, be prepared for some really horrible things if you want to go into this line of work, it is not the clean, easy work TV shows make it look like, but if you really want it, by all means go for it. Good luck!

I would like to be a detective as well but, being a detective is a ranking. You have to do 2 years of patrol before anything. Then you will find the openings for diff. areas like narcotics, homicide, sex crimes, CAC and so on. But for schools i would not go all out. Any school that teaches criminal justice. Such as Sul Ross in Alpine, Tx (Where i would go). They also have an academy there you can go through and be certified to become a basic peace officer anywhere in the state of Texas you want. However you may have to go through a smaller academy wherever you are. I dont know how it works in other states, i just know about texas. =) Best of luck! oh and to the person who posted stop watching CSI thats a very very good show and so is Law and Order:SVU

Both my uncle and my cousin were homicide detectives. They got there mostly through experience as beat cops first. My cousin also was trained as a mortician so he got advanced exposure to dead bodies. Its a nasty, depressing job but if you can divorce your feelings from it go for it. My uncle has long since retired and my cousin started a family and found the job too dangerous so he works for an energy company in their security area. It doesn't really matter where you go to school as long as you get a basic bachelor's degree.
