Business Communication?

Should I major in English and minor in Communication Studies, Public Relations, Business, etc., or vice versa?

  • I think I want to pursue an English degree, but I'm hearing a lot of negative reactions to this, and I've heard that the job prospects with an English degree alone are not good. I am planning on doing one of the following: -Majoring in English while minoring in Communication Studies, Public Relations or Business. OR -Majoring in Communication Studies, Public Relations, or Business while minoring in English. And as I type this, I realize it would probably be smarter to minor in English, but what do you guys think? I'm leaning towards Communication Studies, since I can see that it opens the door to a massive amount of possible careers, and it includes many of the careers I'm interested in looking into. Is it smart to combine English with something like Business, Communication, and Public Relations?

  • Answer:

Major in communications or PR because it is much more broad and beneficial. You can definitely minor in English as well to support your writing skills. But a degree in COMM or PR would benefit you more

I think either way you'll end up with a good degree. They're both highly practical and an English degree can be used for virtually anything. I'm majoring in English too and I totally get where you're coming from. But I would recommend Communication Studies just because you said it lead to many of the careers you are interested in.
