Can I transfer from Devry to a State University?

State University vs. DeVry University? HELP?

  • I am a senior and have recently been accepted into both DeVry University and California State University Sacramento. The thing is, I am really stressing out on my decision. State school would probably good in that I would have a better social life...DeVry is oggd because I can get my BA in a short amount of time but I wouldn't be dorming there so I would be at home with not much of the social aspect... Is there a difference of schools? Do you all have an opinion on my situation?

  • Answer:

Just about any state university will be far more respected in the job market than the for-profit DeVry. DeVry is a commercially operated chain of schools best known for vocational programs. Employers often automatically reject job applicants listing any commercially operated schools (like DeVry). See the Wikipedia report on DeVry and charges against it concerning misrepresentation, unlawful business practices, questionable student loan practices, and deception. A "shortcut degree" will be of little use if it's not well accepted in the job market. Another issue is the social part of college. It's part of the true college experience. You don't want to party so much that you lose sight of giving education a priority, but college can help you network and develop interpersonal social skills. Clearly the state university is superior in both credibility and social benefits.

DeVry is good ONLY for certain TAC/ABET-accredited Engineering Technology degrees. Students in other DeVry degree programs are often dummies.

There is a difference. DeVry is accelerated and it will end up eating more of your money away than Sac State. Plus, i heard that if you plan on going to grad school, your DeVry classes might not be accepted. I once talked to a former student from DeVry and she said that in a year or two, she already dished out the eqivalent of a brand new Benz (which i think she said was about $70k for 2 years) At DeVry, I think you would be paying the Harvard price without the Harvard quality (if you get what i mean). Sac State is still a good school, but you get to save money. DeVry is a for-profit school that puts satisfying shareholders/making money first. It also had some questionable practices regarding numerous student issues (State of NY had one where it accused the school of very questionable student loan lending practices...both sides settled) Students in the past have filed class action lawsuits against the school before. Sac State is better.

Go to the state university. The college life is a life everyone should at least get a year in to experience. I feel sad for people who don't as I spent 2 years in a dorming/party school, and now I am at home getting serious with the books. Its literally a bridge connecting life as a minor to life as an adult. Learn to make good choices, don't drink to much (you should never get black out, bad things can happen), make lifelong friends, and learn lessons to carry with you for the rest of your life. You'll meet great people, meet not so great people, and learn more about yourself everyday. Also, don't go hooking up with people at college. It's to dirty nowadays to risk it! People in college are big on sex because of all the reality shows and just the college lifestyle but this girl in my group of friends got an STD and told one of my friends and that friend got drunk and told my roommate and my roommate told me and now everyone knows. Be careful!!!! Like I said about the bridge between your life! The closer you get to becoming an adult the more stuff impacts directly onto your own life. In the end I wish you the best of luck and happiness in your decision. :)

The decision to advance your education is an important and personal one. You most likely have many decisions ahead of you like which school you should attend, which degree program you should pursue, what career paths a specific degree can help to prepare you for, how you will finance your education, etc. I'd like to provide some clarification points about DeVry University, as you explore your many options. DeVry University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (HLC/NCA), www.ncahlc.org. The University's Keller Graduate School of Management is included in this accreditation. The HLC is one of six regional agencies that accredit U.S. colleges and universities at the institutional level; is recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation; and accredits approximately one-third of U.S. regionally accredited public and private institutions. Accreditation provides assurance to the public and to prospective students that standards of quality have been met.
