Double majoring in college, is it difficult?

What is the best calculator to get for college? Considering in majoring math....?

  • So I am off to college now. I misplaced my TI-84 Silver Edition Calculator which I really did love. I am now buying one for college and don't know if this rand will still be good for my 4 years or is it more likely that I am going to need to buy a different kind in the future. I am considering in pursuing a major in math or statistics or economics. (Well actually double majoring in this and sociology). (Any of those areas). Any recommendations? Thanks

  • Answer:

The TI-84 plus is a great calculator -- but if you wait to purchase your calculator then you can see what your professors recommend. If you can't wait then you can usually email professors before school starts to ask them questions like this. Asking your teacher thoughtful questions like this before the semester starts is a good way to make a good first impression.

Yes call up the school's math department and ask what they recommend getting.

The best calculators around are the ti series. If you want to buy one search up "ti calculator" on the web or buy it from the nearest store.

Get a TI-89 Titanium. It is a very good calculator (I think it's one of TI's top models), and can do almost anything (derivatives, integrals, limits, etc). It can solve things symbolically - which is very helpful. It helped a lot in lower math classes, but started to get a little less useful in higher math classes because it doesn't really do La Place or Fourier transforms. Regardless, I've had mine since my senior year of high school and it has never done me wrong. Also, it has really great battery life and lots of memory.

Lol, I do not think a good college will allow you to use calculator in math class(calculus)

You most likely will not be able to use that specific calculator. I have one just like it actually. I used to use it all the time to type in formulas for calculus and chemistry and it only did me a disservice. You cannot use programmable calculators at my university, so you need to just get a scientific 4 function calculator (i.e. TI 30X 2S).

I would have to agree that a TI-89 is probably the best calculator for college . However if you plan on doing a lot of statistics i think you might want to stay with a TI-84. I found doing stats on a TI-89 to be pretty confusing because the set up is much different than a TI-83 or 84. Also an 84 does do most of the functions a TI- 89 does (such as derivatives, integrals etc.) You just have to search for them.

I would get at least a TI-83+ to help with homework and that, but I would also get just a standard scientific calculator. I know from my own experience that at least some of the classes I've been in don't allow graphing calculators for tests and that.

They make this high end graphing calculator that can do pretty much anything but im not really sure what its called to be exact. but its apparently like a $100 calculator. but its supposed to be like the best calculator around.
