What to major in: biotech or computer science?

What exactly does one learn as a computer science major that makes their job searches better?is there coding..?

  • Right now Im taking my first computer science class where we are learning basic html internet programming like <html> <body> <h1>Hi my name <i>is</i></h1> </body> </html>......................just stuff around that lines, but im really good at it and enjoy it!!! But my parents are worried dropping my english major might be a bad idea for computer science sinc e whatever they do gets outsourced. BUT WHAT DO THEY DO EXACTLY!?!?!!!? What will i learn if i do switch??

  • Answer:

Majoring in computer science is sort of like majoring in "health care." There are many fields rolled into the major--programming, engineering, networking, security, system administration, hardware, hardware/electronics engineering, and so on. Once you select the major, next you need to select the specialty area you're interested in and concentrate on that specialty area. You may have to do a lot of research to determine what part of the field you are interested in--comparable to a "health care" major deciding among nursing, physician, radiography/imaging, public health, medical research, health care administration, physical therapy, psychiatry, and so on and so on and so on, and then having to select a specialty after that. Are there jobs? Yes, there are, and part of the responsibility of your instructors is to be attuned to the direction in which the field is moving and steer you in the direction of where jobs are going to be for the foreseeable future. Are some of the jobs moving offshore? Oh, yes. However, the "cutting edge" jobs, the ones where innovation is taking place, are still here. Ask your instructors what they see as the future of the field and where they see innovation coming from. Then decide how best to train for the jobs that will be there in 4 or 5 years, not the jobs that are no longer done here. Look for the next emerging job--that's the one that will still be viable and still be fun when you're ready for it. The iPad 4G may not be assembled from parts made down the street from you, but the idea behind it was home-grown. On the other hand, you can still MINOR in English if you want to be a technical writer in the computer field or write books about computer-related topics or do for the computer science field what John Grisham did for the legal field.
