How competitive is Hofstra University?

Is Hofstra University hard to get into?

  • I am a freshmen in a university but i really want to study and major in journalism or broadcast journalism when I am a junior. I want something cheap but well known near New York or within New York City...do you think Hofstra is good? How much is it per year. When they mean per year, does that mean Fall and Spring semesters only?

  • Answer:

With room and board, tuition will come to over $40,000 per year (fall and spring semester plus an optional and additional fee for a winter session -- thus the 4-1-4 calendar layout). Just to clarify: 4-1-4 indicates a 4-month semester followed by a 1-month intersession (for the holiday/January break) followed by the 4-month spring semester. Hofstra is NOT as easy to get into as the first terribly ignorant poster suggests (and whose writing suggests that he or she could not get accepted no matter how hard they try). A 2.7 will land you in the remedial program which requires one year of participation and limited privileges and will cost roughly $2000-$4000 more than normal tuiton (which is $28,500 without R&B or $1000+/semester meal plan). They are positioning to be on par with Columbia University by 2020 and each year their standards rise significantly. At least 90% of their full-time professors hold the highest degree in their field (a Ph.D or MBA). A new medical school affiliated with the LIJ hospital network will open for the 2011-2012 academic year. To get in, you will need at least a 3.0 and a 1700 (minimum) on the new SATs. Hofstra is not cheap but it's arguably the best school on Long Island and they give away a lot of financial aid. SUNY Stony Brook is excellent (if not better, at least in the sciences) and about $20,000 less expensive. However, it is way out in Suffolk county and it's no short train ride to the city (about an hour and fifteen minutes). In the city (any of the five boroughs) you can choose from any of the inexpensive CUNY (City Univ. of New York) schools. Most are adequate but your education will almost certainly be better from a place like Hofstra. Fordham is great and much closer to the city but just about the same price as Hofstra.

Hofstra is no a hard school to get into. If u have a 2.7 GPA and average SAT score u will be fine. Per year means fall and spring. You don't have 2 wait until junior year 2 transfer u could go for a year and make sure u take classes that match up with Hofstra's curriculum.
