Answer:
There's no cause for confusion. Please inhale deeply and exhale slowly ... What To Do ~ 1. Decide now which university you're most likely to attend and get their course curriculum for the nursing program there. You may be able to do this on-line. Look closely at the 1st and 2nd semester classes. They're all basic undergraduate classes. English 101, Sociology 101, Psychology 101, Biology 101 and an algebra course or math equivalent course. Most freshmen in the health care field take identical basic classes. Your nursing classes won't begin until your junior and senior years. Your freshman and sophomore years are spent taking health care pre requisites so you'll take classes with pharmacy, physical therapy and even pre med majors. The courses you take at the community college should mimic the courses listed in the university's nursing curriculum. 2. Complete at least a year (I'd do two) at the community college keeping your GPA as close to 3.5 as you can manage. You want a high GPA so that you're competitive. You can still do it with a 3.0 but coming from a community college taking basic courses they will expect more from you. Touch base frequently with the admission's office of the university to make sure the classes you're taking at community college meet the requirements of the university nursing program. Basic classes almost always transfer but you don't want to make mistakes because you failed to check first. 3. Most nurses hate math. That's a big reason we're nurses and not something else... lol Seriously, nursing programs typically require a single math course and honestly, that was my only "D" during my entire university experience. I just can't do college math BUT I CAN DO NURSING MATH and you'll be able to do it too. Promise. 4. What you're wanting to do is done all the time. The admission's office has helped many students set out on the right path to a successful transfer. You'll have to communicate with both offices to make sure that you are meeting requirements. It's not so important where you go to school, it's more important that you give a stellar performance whereever you go and that you're actually LEARNING something so that means picking a reputable school with a high % of students who complete the program and get their nursing license after graduation. You will have to sit for the NCLEX one day so really, you better be learning something while you're in school... If you don't pass the NCLEX, then you can't practice nursing regardless of what degree the university grants you so pick a university with high % of students who pass the NCLEX. You can find out the averages on line or you can ask the office of the nursing school. It's public knowledge. Nursing schools with 80% pass rates are acceptable. Best of luck in your future educational endeavors.
