New Answer: Of the answers you have received, I agree most with Jimmie R, who suggested you answer in narrative form. A story is always more concrete than a set of propositional statements; it's also more vivid and more revealing of your "voice," which says more about who you are than said statements. Don't have a great story that seems to fit the bill? Sure you do. You may have to tweak the facts a little bit, but that's okay; you're reaching for a deeper kind of truth than "fact truth." Obviously, don't make yourself out to be the next Iron Man, but feel free to give yourself--and other "characters"--some lines and some actions that reveal what you feel to be the real truth of who you are. One thing to remember: I can't tell you how many essays I read, as an admissions officer, that seemed to assume I liked being bullsh*tted. Yes, I admitted some of their authors, but it was in spite of, not because of, their essays. If you want to write an essay that will enhance your application, assume you're writing for someone not unlike yourself. (In fact, lots of admissions offices hire recent graduates, so some of your readers may be more like you than you think.) Nobody wants to read a bunch of fatuous drivel riddled with sententious cliches, and yet so many high school students believe that admissions committees salivate over exactly that (note: that's vomit, not saliva). Best of luck with your essay!

Ask 3-5 friends to answer that question about you in 1 word. Really only 1, no cheating on their part. Use those 3-5 words (assuming they don't all say, "Amazing") like bullet points: "As a way to start this essay, I asked five friends to describe who I am. My friend Neil said I was "anxious". I am anxious - anxious to start discovering my life after high school... etc. My friend Liz said I was "trustworthy". While I am obviously not a Boy Scout, I have tried to be someone my friends and family could trust...etc." And so on. You could even make up 5 words that you think describe you well and use them the same way (and even ascribe them to people you know), just in case you don't have articulate friends. :D

When I applied a few years ago, a college that I didn't really care about getting into asked this question. I was fed up with the application process, so I wrote a ridiculous poem mocking the question. I still got in.
