What's up with Algebra in college? They try and force it on everyone now as much as possible....?

Is it some kind of requirement now where you're considering adequately smart enough to be like everyone else by finishing Algebra? Since when has Algebra EVER been necessary to live in day to day life, working, etc.? Basically no entry level workers, non-college students, workers, etc. never use Algebra merely beyond factoring in Pre-Algebra. Does anybody REALLY honestly, stay with me here, CARE about advanced Algebraic formulas, Trigonometry, Calculus, etc.? It's doesn't deeper any knowledge ... in fact saying that is almost like saying anyone who never did Algebra is a moronic failure. You don't need Algebra in most jobs out there, so why are most college students given college math? Am I supposed to work out my advanced Quad-Gi^pi Algebraic mathematical genius formula to throw garlic into a pot and stir it? Or is some deeper fascination with triangles and shapes going to help me write English grammar more properly? Possibly the fact that NOTHING Algebra related, beyond Pre-Algebra, is ever hardly necessary. I mean just because most people use it makes it necessary for everyone to use it to advance, be above "stupid", and be able to walk and breathe? Honestly ... prove right now why anyone's intelligence should be based off of Algebra in college.

Answer:
I agree 100%. Algebra, calculus, trig, etc. are completely worthless in 99% of professions; however pre-algebra, as you said, is used regularly. There are some professions that require advanced math, sure - but why not make math courses part of the majors that relate to those professions. I took Algebra II in college with 4 other classes and my algebra class cost me more study time than all other classes COMBINED. I'm glad someone posted this - relieves the stress =). If you struggle with college algebra, have you ever thought about visiting a tutor on a regular basis (on campus, hopefully professional and not peer)? If not, have you tried using any math software for practice problems/answers (Maplesoft, Algebrator, Sage, etc.)? Anyway, I hope algebra doesn't keep you from earning your college degree. That would be a shame.

looking at functions on a graph--graphical representations are used in many jobs being able to write ideas down in the form of equations and understand them is used in numerous careers--the idea being that you can see how proportionality, inverse proportions, and unknowns factor into decisions. simply being able to show you can think in analytic terms is important in many careers and if you think "college algebra" involves "advanced algebra formulas" you are seriously mistaken.
