What do colleges look for when applying?

Do colleges look at grades or essay more when applying?

  • I am applying to college as a transfer, do colleges look at grades/hours or essays more i am terrible at writing but my grades are good

  • Answer:

They'll look at grades over your essay. While both are important, your grades are the best indicator of the type of student you are. Seeing as how you're hoping to attend this school as a student, they're going to want to know that you can keep up academically. If writing is really a struggle for you, see if there's something you can do to improve that portion of your application. If you have an English or communications instructor you can trust see if they're willing to critique your essay. Failing that, your current school may have a writing center. Worst case scenario, there are always good friends who are better at writing. There's no shame in asking for help!

Two major factors are your unweighted cumulative GPA and your ACT/SAT scores Realize that in college you are going to be doing a lot of writing. You will be required to write essays in almost all of your classes. I highly suggest trying to take AP english language. You really need to know how to write a college level paper correctly and fast.
