How to become a Certified Nurse Midwife?

I am interested in becoming a certified nurse midwife. Is the only way to become one is to acquire a MSN?

  • Just wanted to know if there is a different route to become a midwife. Is it possible to become a registered nurse and "work your way" up to a midwife? What other ways can you obtain a specialty?

  • Answer:

Hello! Certified Nurse Midwives are a specialized nurses that have followed the guidelines set forth by the American College of Nurse-Midwives that strongly emphasize the need for a graduate degree in nursing in order to practice as a CNM. This is due, in part, to the guidelines set forth by the AACN, which require all CNM programs to award a Masters of Science (MS) or Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) and/or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree by 2010. There are other options besides a MSN, but, in terms of competing for jobs and fulfilling the rigorous requirments of the CNM job, it is recommended to take the standard path. Other options include post graduate certificates, bridge/accelerated nursing programs, and the option in a few states to obtain a midwifery certification without nursing experience. Additionally, there are women's health nursing positions that work within the OB/GYN field, like a CNM, that do not require a MSN degree, including Labor & Delivery nurses. Best of luck!
