Questions about College Majors?

I'm 15 and I have questions about college majors. any help ?

  • I want to be a writer , but I do want a few back-up careers. I heard you can double major , so I was thinking about majoring in Computer Engineering & either Business or Communications & minoring in English . After I finished college I really wanted to take some culinary classes . Should I major in Business or Communications as a second major ? How long will the double major & a minor take to complete ? & I'm a little confused about about what exactly happens when you leave college . I mean , not to sound dumb and clueless , but you graduate . . . And then what ?

  • Answer:

You are not likely to be able to double major (one bachelor's degree in two fields) in a business field and an engineering field, but you may be able to earn a dual degree (two bachelor's degrees earned simultaneously). Degrees are granted by "schools" or "colleges" within a university. Engineering and Business are usually two different "schools" or "colleges." If you want to be a writer, major in English, Creative Writing, Journalism, or Communications with a second major or a minor in something that is likely to be more marketable (computer science, business, etc.) If you earn a double major, you might not finish in four years unless you take summer classes or test out of some classes. The details depend on the policies of your university. After you finish college, one usually either starts graduate or professional school or gets a job.

You don't need a college education to be a writer. A lot of successful writers did not get English degrees. Doing a double major in 2 unrelated fields, especially if one of them is engineering, will take a long time to finish, probably at least 5 years, maybe more if you're doing a minor in another unrelated field. I would strongly suggest just picking one. If you actually like computers and are good at math and science, go with computer engineering. But if you just picked it because engineering has good job prospects, you'll be in trouble. Engineering is hard. You'll be taking at least 4 advanced math classes as well as chemistry and physics. After you graduate you find a job, go to grad school to get a Master's or PhD, or get a professional degree in something like law or medicine.

To double major and take a minor, you will not be able to finish in four years. Too many credits to do. Um you graduate and then you A: hopefully find a job or B go on to Grad school if you have a GPA of at least 3.0
