How can I improve my writing skills for a college course?
-
I'm starting a college english class this semester and i am really scared to go into it. My writing skills are so bad, my grammar and punctuation is the worst and i can't write an essay for the life of me. the funny thing is though that i love to read, i read all the time but this doesn't seem to improve my writing. the class is college level so im afraid everyone else is going to be so superior than me and that the teacher is just going to laugh in my face compared to everyone else's writing. I did not do alot of writing in high school so now i think it's catching up to me and I'm terrified of doing like a term paper at the end of the semester. I know that i will have to do one as a requirement and i have never done one so i am just freaking out about it. please help me. i need any advice that you can give me to improve. I need to pass this class with an "A". Appreciate any REAL help. (please no rude comments)

firstly you need to ask yourself the question of what materials are you reading. Sure you may love to read but are the books you're reading ones that contain proper and influential vocabulary that you should be using in ur writing as a college student? If not, change your reading material, try somethng a little more indepth , with more tense vocabulary etc. This may not necessarily be boring books but try some thrillers, inspirational stuff, even encyclopedias if the need arises! Trust me these things help. I would actually reccommend you read a book on improving writing skills, it would certainly help. Once you've changed ur reading material, you'll realizze that you're working on ur problem even when relaxing! Secondly try choosing a topic you'd expect to have to write a college paper on. Then break whatever topic that is into several small parts so that it seems really easy and beneath even your level of writing. Once you've dne that write on all those small pieces than pice them together again to form the entire college paper. Read this paper over and make whatever changes you may need to, add big words, take out grammatical errors whatever it may be. You'll be surprised how breaking hings down this simply can get you really far. Practice this for a while then eventually you'll get better. Afetr a couple attempts try writing a college paper on your own wihout braking it down first. Keep all ur work and refer back to them. And you should keep reading those great books! Get a lecturer or friend or parent to just check things over as well. You've got the will, so as long as you do the work- you'll succeed. happy writing!

Don't worry! The other students can't write either! I think you are fine. Your writing of this question is fine. An introductory composition teacher would probably give you a c+ for this at the beginning of a class. Many times the composition teachers will walk you through writing the papers. That's their job a,fter all to teach you how to write! Don't be afraid to see a teacher if you need writing help. Also, most colleges have writing labs that are staffed with knowledgeable assistants that can help you. What can help you the most is writing and proofreading. Simply capitalizing your sentences and making sure you have basic punctuation, will help you. I suggest you send email correspondence to your friends, or type and send paper letters to your family. Proofread them carefully, and don't be afraid to revise and rewrite. Imagine how pleased your aunt or uncle will be to hear from you in writing! It's always impressive to get sincere, correspondence. So, you can score points and practice your writing at the same time. I would also recommend you buy a reference book. Strunk and White have a classic style guide, and a really good book on grammar is helpful. These need to be hard copy because you want them beside the computer for easy reference, and not on screen where you have to switch windows. Summary: Write Proofread Consult guides and experts Rewrite David P.S. A lot of people submit writing here and ask for critiques. That seems to always get good responses. P.P.S. I had to proofread this three times. It's probably still not perfect!

I know at my college there is a class called "college success" it helps with everything from writing, studying tips, how to remember things, note taking ,thinking, communicating, planning, as well as helping to adapt to college life, things that will also help make you a better person in your personal life. I had to take it because I had to take 2 prep classes, but I am very glad I took it. It taught me a lot and im very glad I took it. if you dont have something like that in your school or you cant get into it in time, there are normally english tutors or english lab rooms.. there is always someone there to help you. If you dont know of anything, ask your teacher. I dont know how big your classes are, if its a community college or university but i know at a CC its a lot easier to communicate with your professors than a university.. if you dont feel comfortable doing that, talk to a counselor.. just go to where you registered for classes and ask someone there for some advice and they will be happy to point you in the right direction. i hope this helps a little. i myself am not the best in English and I just started back to school after being out of high school for 5 years, so Im a little rusty in everything. I just know there are a lot of resources at school to help you if you need it.

Vocabularity and sentence diagraming. The idea is to make strong sentences with the best word that you can find. English 101 or 1 usually deals with Rhetoric, subjective and objective writing. They may also want you to follow a style format such as the Chicago Manual, but the teacher will determine that, as there are about six formats they could use, if any. The best thing to do is work on vocabulary building and learning to make strong sentences. Paddy Cheyefsky once said one of the things he does is to remove all the adjectives, thus the above would be: Work on vocabulary and make strong sentences. See how that got tightened up. Think subject and verb.

True, not having done a lot of writing in high school won't help you, but you have to work with what you've got now. Your college should have a writing center or tutoring available. Take advantage of those resources if you need them; they're there for your benefit. Also, go to your professor and/or TA and ask for input on drafts of your papers far enough in advance before you turn them in that you have enough time to work on revisions. Most teachers would rather deal with a subpar student who wants to get better than a brilliant one who takes naps in the back of the room, so don't be afraid of getting laughed at.

Firstly, you seem to be desperate, and that has come through loud and clear in your writing. This means that you ARE writing well. Secondly, reading a lot IS the best way to write well. Probably some attention to the technical aspects like punctuation, grammar, and spelling may add value. All these are learnable skills. The important thing is to realize that you are doing well in the primary object of communication. Ultimately, each one develops a style of one's own. You are alright. Just go on doing it. Get: 1. The (Little Book) 'The Elements of Style', by W.Strunk(jr) and E.B.White, Pub: Longman (mentioned by intension) and 2. The Reader's Digest publication,'Write Better, Speak Better' These two together are enough to hone up your writing. They can be read at odd moments and will not eat into a busy college schedule.
