If I want to work with animals, what should I Major in?

I want to work with animals, what degree should I choose?

  • I am about to complete my Associates in Arts degree and I realized that I want a career working with animals at zoos, wildlife centers, vet clinics, human societies, educating people about animals....pretty much anywhere there are animals. I was looking into becoming a Veterinary Technician(which looks like a great program) but that would require me to get another Associates degree,so I wasn't sure if that was a smart idea. Also, I was looking into a Bachelors in Zoology degree but it requires a bunch of chemistry and biology which I struggled with in high school. I love animals and I don't care how much money I make as long as I like my job. I have scholarship that will cover about half of my tuition for another 60 credits, so I need to figure out what I want to do. I would love any suggestions or guidance, please help me :)

  • Answer:

I would recommend first job shadowing at both small and large animal veterinary clinics, domestic animal shelters, and with wildlife rehabilitators to develop a realistic feel for the field. Bachelors in Zoology or Biology grads are in large numbers for the few zoo jobs, but vet techs are in high demand nearly everywhere. Unless you want a veterinary technology degree or to apply for vet school, I would pass on the BS. Zoos also need certified veterinary technicians for surgical assistance and treatments. Veterinary technician programs also include chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology, and pharmacology, so buckle down.
