Is there a difference between Columbia college and Columbia university?

What is the difference between a community college and a university?

  • I just started at Columbia Gorge community college and plan to go to Oregon state university in 2 years. I would like to know how different are community colleges and universities.

  • Answer:

Community colleges are smaller, are more numerous and give less academically challenging degrees (which is why they only take two years). The average age is also higher in community colleges because many people within the community, a lot who even have 4-year degrees, take classes for fun or personal enrichment. They are often a stepping stone to four year universities for students who are unprepared or unable to jump right into a four year full time university setting. You are much less likely to find international or even out-of-state students at a community colleges.

The opportunities post graduation will be far better after you finish at OSU. Make the most that you can at Columia Gorge though because it will be good training for the classes to follow at OSU. If you feel weak in any subject, get it covered at the CC so that when you get to OSU you can move forward quickly. Good luck.
