Best universities...? (UK)?

  • which universities are the best for studying biology or chemistry courses in the uk??

  • Answer:

University of Cambridge http://www.cam.ac.uk/ The School of the Biological Sciences Responsible for teaching undergraduates in both biological sciences and the biomedical sciences needed for medicine and veterinary medicine. There are approximately 450 students reading biology in each of the three years of the undergraduate science degree course (the Natural Sciences Tripos, or NST). In the first two years of this course, students are mostly taught in shared interdepartmental courses, but then have the opportunity to specialise in their third and final year. The School also teaches basic biomedical sciences to 370 medical and veterinary students in each of the first three years of their respective courses. Most students complete their professional qualification by the end of their second year, and can then complete an intercalated science degree by the end of their third year, before proceeding to clinical study, either in Cambridge, Oxford or London. In addition to undergraduate teaching the Faculty of Biology, together with the Faculty of Clinical Medicine, runs a large Graduate School, with approximately 1500 graduate students, most of whom are carrying out research for the degree of PhD in the departments of the two Faculties. The Graduate School administers training programmes aimed to enhance transferable skills and personal and scientific development for the graduate students in both Faculties. The Cambridge Chemistry Department Consists of a large number of strong individual groups covering an extraordinary spectrum of science, centred on Chemistry, and ranging from Molecular Biology to Geophysics. The Department consists of over 70 academic staff, 110 support staff, 250 postgraduate students and 180 postdoctoral research workers who are supported from central funds or by grants from Research Councils, the European Union, industry, charities or other sources. Many of the academic staff, have been awarded medals or prizes, and we have 10 Fellows of the Royal Society active in research. Our strength is recognised by the award of the highest possible (5*) rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. The key features of our present success and future strategy are: * the development of fundamental understanding, with the emphasis on new structural, synthetic and theoretical techniques applicable in both academic and industrial contexts; * recruitment of the highest quality academic staff, encouraging all to develop an independent research group with the freedom to associate with other groups; * recruitment of the best possible PhD students and research staff. The number of research workers has increased by nearly 50% over the last ten years without compromising quality; * the pursuit of interdisciplinary collaborations, within the Department, with other departments in the University, and with external industrial and academic institutions; * updating and extending the 'fabric of the laboratory' building to provide the best possible environment for all our research activities; * the securing of sufficient public and private sector finance to underpin all these goals. Since 1997 the Department has been awarded over £ 55M from industry and various public sector initiatives for modernising and extending its research laboratories.

Pretty much all the ones listed are good, but there are many others too. All of the Russell group (http://www.russellgroup.ac.uk/) for a start (obviously excluding LSE!). There are a couple missing from that list notably York and Durham. Eventually you need to visit unis but I accept first you need to narrow it down a little bit.
