Can you have more than two majors?

Can i do two majors in college?

  • im about to be a sophomore but im thinking ahead so im interested in medicine[neonatal nurse] or photography so how can i do that? we'll it be hard? is there anything i can do to prepare myself?

  • Answer:

Yes, it is very possible to do that. I myself have a double major in biology (botany emphasis) and natural science (life emphasis). I also have a double minor in applied mathematics and chemistry. It took me six years to get my B.S. -- I would have had it in five, but I had some scheduling conflicts, I dropped a class that was only offered in the fall, and I wanted to go to grad school and had to take a year of physics. When I was in graduate school, I had a double major in horticulture and agroecology. It took me an additional 3 years. My point is that yes, it is possible. The only thing that you are going to run into is that you will have degrees in two very different areas and you won't have classes that will count for both degrees. For example, when I took biochemistry in my fifth year, it counted for both of my majors and my chemistry minor. As long as you are okay with not getting through college in four years, you will be fine. Also, another thing is that this will help you when you get to the point of looking for a job. I graduated a year ago in May and when I finally was hired, the reason that I was chosen (for a job that I was slightly qualified for) was because I had a diverse background and could bring more experience to the job than someone that just knew the job. With your touch into the art side with photography, you will show creativity on your resume. For those looking to hire you, they will find that as something that makes you stand out from the rest of the applicants. For example, if you are into research, having that photo background will be essential for work under the microscopy or with the various ultrasound/etc. technology that is involved. And you are in high school, so this a great time to be thinking about this. You should find a school that has great programs in both of your areas -- most likely it will be a public institution. Make sure to take classes like bio, chem, physics, advanced math, and art to enhance your high school career and to prepare you for college. Good luck!

Yes, you can do a double major - yes, it will be hard..more work...longer time in school...more doubling up on stuff since they are very different subjects. However, you can also do a major and a minor - still alot more work than just one major but probably not as intesive as a double major. Look into doing a minor along with your major and see if that'll work before you overload yourself and lose your inspiration. Best of luck!

Sure it’s possible. I have a double major in chemistry and business (want to start my own pharmacy). The issue you will run into is that since they are two unrelated fields you will have to take a lot of classes because you won't get any double credits. If you were taking say biology and chemistry a lot of the requirements are the same so you can take one class and it moves you on in both majors. To help avoid getting bogged down with 18+ hours a semester you should take as many advanced AP classes you can while in high school. ALWAYS pay to get the college credit if you can. Classes are always easier in high school and usually much cheaper as well. This will help you get some of your gen eds out of the way and help keep your schedule light. Also try and take as many advanced Biology classes as possible to help get a leg up for college. A couple of things you might consider are: 1) You don't have to finish in 4 years. It took me 5 and that’s perfectly ok. You want to take enough classes to challenge yourself but not so many that your grades slip. 2) consider a minor in photography. If you don't plan on making this a career a minor will teach you all of the basics and most of the advanced stuff. Hope this helps.

yes, you can! it's called "double-major" and you can totally do it at most institutions. i would get with your academic advisor and ask him/her to help you find a plan. it might take longer (especially since the focuses are so different!), but if you love your subjects, you'll do great! you can also major in one focus, and take a minor in another, in case the workload looks to be too strenuous!

You can do as many majors as you want. My best friend is doing three. Just know that it probably means many hours, alot of work, and probably summer school the entire time you're in school. At least if you still want to graduate in four years.

Guess who's bored. Me.

it's actually not that hard. Besides a major, college require general education requirements that force you to take stuff outside your major, so for double majors the credits you get in one field will count for the gen-ed's for the other and vice versa. It might take you an extra semester is all if you plan it well.

Yeah, you should be able too. I am going into my second year at University and they are giving me a choice of taking on another subject, that I can major in, it shouldn't be too much work, and at the end of the day, it will look a mighty damn good when you graduate with two majors! Good luck!

Yes, having two majors is called double majoring. Double majoring isn't harder, it can just take longer to complete your degree though. If you find this to difficult, consider having one of those areas be your minor (realistically, major in neonatal nurse and minor in photography). A minor is an area of focus and requires less classes than doing a second major.

You can double major in college. As far as HS is concerned might want to prepare to take a lot of AP tests-- most schools have exit requirements apart from your major, and if you can get these waived via AP test scores you'll have more time to double major. Of course you can also minor, or just take a lot of classes (say if you want to be a nurse as a job but photography's your passion...)

You have 2 very different majors unless your talking about medical imaging. If you are not, I'd recommend you find out which one you are the most passionate about. Because think of it this way, 2 majors that are not related means 2 (different) jobs. Going to college, hopefully, finds you 1 job that provides. The best way to "prepare" yourself since you're a sophmore, is to just continue your high school education and see at the end of your junior year what you would like to pursue. In the meantime you can research each option, their pay, benefits, work enviroments, ect., on Google, ect. Hope this helps a littlebit. =) http://yourcollege101.com
