Is it hard to get into dental hygiene program?

I'm number 2 on the waitlist for the dental hygiene program. Do you think I'll get in?

  • Everyone in my college got notified today for whether they were accepted into the program for fall 2012. I got notified and the letter said that I am number 2 on the waitlist, so if 2 people change their major or dropout I can get into the program this fall. Do you think I have any chances?

  • Answer:

You have a much better chance if there are forty spaces in the program than if there are twelve, for example.

Hard to say, without knowing how many people they accepted...but in my experience, schools hardly ever enroll 100% of the people they admit. Some people always decline because they changed their minds about the program, or they got in someplace they like better, or they've decided they can't afford it, or they've gotten sick, or somebody in their family is sick, or they're having a baby, or...you get the idea. Life happens, and they decide to do something else instead. So hang on and wait a bit--you might get good news.

Don't give up yet! When I was applying to my dental hygiene program they only accepted 20 students and had a waiting list of 32. By the time we got through summer orientations before our first semester started they had already made it through 17 on the wait list. People change their minds or applied to more than one program and get accepted somewhere they would rather go. Things happen. Good luck!
