What are humanities classes?

Which humanities classes should I take? I need to take 2?

  • I am finishing up my prerequisites for the nursing program but I still have two humanties classes left to take. Out of the 4 options what should I choose? What is the easiest because my science classes are so hard I would rather take the easiest humanities classes. HUM1001- Art History: Prehistory to the Middle Ages HUM1002- History of Art from Middle Ages to Modern Times ENG2002- World Literature I: From the Ancient World to the Early Modern Period PHI2301- Introduction to Philosophy Thanks for your advice!

  • Answer:

I choose this one as being easiest: HUM1001- Art History: Prehistory to the Middle Ages You will learn about art work used in ancient religions, among other things. It will have less 'stuff' about modern art and analysis. I expect you will be reading less, and the required amount of deep-level thinking will be much reduced, as compared to the other courses you listed (my subjective prediction). Keep an open mind toward art. It is an important part of culture. When you appreciate art, you learn to respect the way people think.

In general, the easiness of a college class is very dependent on the professor teaching the class.

I agree with the person who recommended taking one you find most interesting; teachers yes, do make some difference but then again, certain students click better with certain teachers, so I wouldn't just go by that. However, since nursing is a field that promotes humanity, I think philosophy is not only the most interesting of all those, but might also help you gain a perspective on how your relationships with patients might depend on your similarity in philosophy. Alternately, a patients philosophical view also determines their approach to healing, which if you can relate to, makes you less cynical or judgmental and helps you to help them.

I don't think any class is easy here: you're still going to have to do some work for these classes. Typically, I find that picking courses that I am interested in will make it easier because I would enjoy taking it. So I personally would choose World Lit 1 and maybe intro to philosophy only because I don't like art history. So whichever courses are most appealing to you take. Because if you take a course just because you think it's easy and you don't like the subjects, it will be a lot more painful and possibly worse than your science courses.

It would seem to me, (considering the nature of nursing and the titles (assumed content), of those courses), that none of them would be appropriate for the functions of nursing, in terms of a practical knowledge of the humanities! Law, sociology, abnormal psychology, 'agency' agendas, economics, ect., would seem much more appropriate to me.

I took art history and philosophy of religions. both were easy but you really need to focus more on the teacher. it depends on them if the class would be easy or hard. and world literature, im guessing you would have to read and write alot coz my friend has it right now.
