What can I do with a bachelors degree in engineering management?

Which degree/major: Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Business Management?

  • I have an A.S. degree in Construction Technology and certificates in Building Codes and AutoCAD. I am torn on which degree to choose, I have to leave town (don't really want to) to pursue a B.S. in Civil Engineering (ABET accreditated) or Construction Management (ACCE accreditated) whereas I can stay in my hometown and pursue a B.S. in Business Management (AACSB accreditated) in a year less of time and substantially cheaper. If I pursued the Business degree, i'll get a PMP certificate from the Project Management Institute also. I Want to eventually be a General B or A Contractor, I want to design my projects, estimate, bid, and schedule them. I would like to work for a good engineering, architecure, or construction firm after graduation to gain some experience, which route should I choose? Would the Business degree be irrelevant to what i'm trying to do?

  • Answer:

Civil Engineering sounds best to me. construction management is too narrow. Business BA degree doesn't matter unless you want to do finance. MBA is required for other fields.
