What does it take to become a pediatrician?

  • Hi, I'm going to be a senior next year and after high school I'm looking into becoming a pediatrician, but i want to know what exactly does it take to become one? like step by step after I graduate. It would be really helpful! Oh I want to go to a junior college and transfer to a University but I'm just really lost. Then i want to go t a 2yr and transfer to a 4yr.. PLEASE HELP :(

    1. You need to complete a 4 year Bachelors degree in any field along with the required prerequisites for medical school. The commonly accepted coursework requirements for medical school include a minimum of 1 year of: General biology Physics with lab General chemistry (inorganic chemistry) with lab Organic chemistry with lab Calculus English If you must go to community college do not take these prerequisites until you transfer. 2. You then need to complete 4 years of medical school. 3. After which you complete a 3 year pediatrics residency.

If you are interested in saving time, apply to a 6 year program for medical school. This means that you will finish your undergraduate studies AND medical school in only 6 years. It saves a lot of money too. You will have to take biology, chemistry, and physics classes when you go to university to learn the basis for medicine. And then, in your 3rd year of college, you will take the MCAT to see what medical schools you can get into (40 is the average score for this, I think). Then, you will go to medical school for 4 years. Then, you will go into residency for 4 years minimum (5 years for a surgery specialty). Here, in residency, you will train in pediatrics. You can also do a fellowship, which is like extra specialized training and looks great. Then, it is recommended, that you gain hospital privileges before you obtain a private practice (if you want to work on your own and own your practice).
