Which is better: College or University?

Which would be better? Community College then transfer to university, or just university?

  • For college I am planning on going to a community college for two years. While attending there I will get my associates degree, then transfer to a university and take the classes for my career. Is this a good idea or not? I have calculated it out and it would be cheaper, and the community college has a better student teacher ratio. What should I do?

  • Answer:

that's what i am doing. i had the grades to go to a university, but i didnt want to move and it's MUCH cheaper. the education is the same except the classes are much smaller. in the end, when you get your bachelors degree, it won't matter whether you went to a community college or just the 4 year university. the only thing that matters is what school you got the degree from. good luck! college is great

It is much cheaper. It will also be easier to get into a better school if you do well in community college than it would be straight out of high school. It is a good plan. Do whatever works best for you. Make sure you look at what classes you will need to transfer into the program you want. You don't need to actually get your associates degree to transfer. You can transfer at any point. Most community colleges have deals with the bigger colleges so that the classes transfer for what you need. Make sure you look into it or you may end up taking similar courses over because there are different requirements at the different schools.

A lot of community colleges have programs that work with university. Sometimes the programs are called the 2+2 or 1+1. How this works is you attend the community college and do all of your pre reqs, which can take up to two years. Than you transfer to the university and take all of your core classes. This saves a lot of money. Why spend for example $400 for a math class that is a pre req, when you can spend $200 at the community college. We have a community college called Ivy Tech, across the street is a satellite college of Purdue. The instructors teach at both colleges. So we have a lot of kids do the 2+2 program. 2 years at Ivy Tech then 2 years at Purdue. They end up with a degree from Purdue. It is a great idea to do that. Talk to a counselor at either the university that you want to go to or the community college in your area and see what they have to offer that would work best for you. Good Luck and God Bless

It is more cost effective to get your Associates degree and then attend university; however, research shows that you are more likely to complete your Bachelors degree if you attend a university from the start. If you are a self-directed learner and you are good at persisting in achieving your goals, start at community college. Make sure that your coursework will count towards any gen ed requirements that you may need at your university, especially if you decide to transfer. Good luck!
