If I want to become a doctor what should I do?

If you want to become a doctor, what is the best college for you?

  • I want to become a doctor. Somewhere in the field of surgery or delivering babies or something like that. So what would a good college to get into be for doing that? Also, what GPA would I need to get into the school? SAT score? Any and all advice will be MUCH appreciated!!! By the way, how do you get a 4.0 average? My freshmen year i got around 4 high A's and 3 low B's. If i got strait A's through the rest of high school, would i be able to make 4.0? What about top 10% and top 100? do school's really look at that? What would it take to get in there?

    If med school is your goal, you want to get into one of the strongest colleges that you possibly can. Something that ranks within around the top 100-125 national universites, or the top 75 or so liberal arts colleges, if you look at the US News rankings: http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college Any of those would be good. You can look each one up on a site like Princeton Review or www.collegeboard.com to find out their average GPA and SATs. When you look at colleges, you can actually ask them what percentage of their med school applicants actually get into US med schools, and they will have this info. It can be a very telling statistic. You don't necessarily need a perfect 4.0 to get into a good college. What you want to do is keep your GPA at or above the level you have it at now, and to start to move into honors/AP classes wherever you can.

Look up University of Florida. They got an awesome medical program. You won't get a 4.0 unless you are a straight A student or somebody with only a few B's that you end up with an A on average. Schools look at top percentages if they have too many applicants and need to filter them further.

You'll have to do individual research b/c each university will require different HS GPAs and SAT scores. 4.0 on a 4.0 scale means all As. I don't know if your HS runs off a 6.0 scale though (you'd have to check with them about that, my HS had a 6.0 scale). Public schools in some states are required by law to admit all students in the top 10%. This law is becoming less popular though and many states are changing it. So yes, it could be useful but then again, it all depends on the school you choose. Private schools don't care about the top 10%. To figure out what number you'd have to be in order to be in top 10, you'll need to know how many kids are in your class. Then multiply that number by .10 and the remaining number is how many students can be in the top 10. For example, my class at 300 students. 300x.10= 30. I was number 21 so I was in the top 10. Make sense?
