Economics without math?
-
Sorry, i know i totally asked this last night, but i just want to ask it again because 1am didn't seem like the right time to ask a question. Basically heres the scenario. My university offers an economics study program which is normal economics take away the math and with more focus on policy and application. "The Economic Studies Program is appropriate for those who want a liberal arts background in economics for its own sake, as preparation for professional schools (such as Law), or as a useful complement to related disciplines (such as Anthropology, Education, History, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology), or related programs (such as the Law and Society Program). There is less emphasis in Economic Studies on economic theory, and statistics, and more on policy and applications. Students contemplating graduate work in Economics should take the Economics program rather than Economic Studies." My current major is sociology but im scared that wont get me a job after I graduate. I can't stand math which part of the reason this interests me. I need 30 credit hours in the economics department to major which means I can take practical courses too. The non heavy math courses offered are things like Public Policy Analysis, Industrial Organization: Theory, Economics of Human Resources, International Economics: Trade, The Economics of Strategic Thinking. The problem is I really like the other social sciences like psych, anthro and soc. But I would definitely rather major in this if it means i get to have a job after (I can just take fun courses on the side). So heres some ways to think about the question. 1.If you were an employer you had to hire 1 of 2 people who happened to be identical in every way except there education and one had an economics degree that doesn't have much math and the other one, a sociology degree who would you hire? 2.Do all business jobs require math? like human resources and sales person and so on. 3.Can I still get jobs in the humanities with an econ studies degree like people with psych and soc degrees do? 4.If you were in my shoes what would you do?(assuming transferring out of arts is not an option because you've fallen in love with it.) 5.Are there jobs for econ majors that don't involve working in banks? I don't have any interest in being a financial adviser or anything, I just want to be able to get a job after graduating. 6(not as related as the other questions but still wanna hear opinions on this). Is it more important to do what you love or do what is practical? 8.What kind of career choices would I be looking at with this degree? Would I need further education? 7.To sum it all up, is the idea of economics without heavy math useless and pretty much just a joke since business's usually hire them for banking jobs. In my opinion it doesn't seem useless, the classes seem to have more real world applications than the ones im taking now. They say arts majors can do anything, so im hoping that still applies here. Also, I know my grammar sucks, gotta take some writing courses next year. Thanks so much Sincerely, a frustrated arts student who has no idea what to do with his life, and can't get a meeting with an academic adviser till next week.

Very interesting! I'm not an expert in this, but I see no one else has answered in 2 hours, so I'll offer an opinion and a link. Be sure you can do what you love. This may mean moving to a different part of the country or the world where your knowledge, skills and talent are needed, It may mean finding a "day job" that pays enough to support you so you can do what you love. Store clerks are active in local drama groups; waiters serve as tutors in schools; musicians by night are inventory managers in warehouses by day. I'm in my fourth career. Last week I was a substitute teacher in Special Education. The week before I restored a bathroom floor that had rotted and repaired the toilet that caused the rotting. Nezt week I will be a photographer at a rally and will build a duplex doghouse. I'm composing a Mass for church. I consulted with my son-in law to help him solve an electrical problem. Over the years-- from elementary school through college and in all my work experience, I've been able to DEVELOP EXPERTISE in many areas. That, I believe is the key to happiness in anyone's work life. I love it all. The world is constantly changing, and at an increasing rate. Careers will develop that you can hardly imagine today. (In 1964, had someone told me we'd be using cameras without film, and could send retouched images anywhere in the world almost instantly, I'd have thought them to be crazy. but I've done that.) Be ready. The bureau of labor statistics publishes the Occupational Outlook Handbook with descriptions for practically every job available in America today. Browse through it online. Who knows? An economist who understands sociology, ecology, history, law and loves music may be just what we need to guide us to sustainable, equitable economic growth in our nation and in our world. (You can hire a math major and a computer engineer to get the numbers crunched; there are lots of them.) Follow your heart. Best Wishes
