What is the average salary of an RN with A.A.S degree?

Associates to Bachelor's Degree?

  • I currently in possession of a AAS, Associates Degree in Applied Science (office Technology) but sadly since graduating college in 2007 have never found a job with it and have worked in Customer service. Since loosing my job at the beginning of the year and now collecting UI, I am thinking of going for a Bachelor's Degree because I don't want to end up with another dead end job in my hands. I have two toddlers and our family is barely making it but my husband is encouraging me to go back so we can make our family better. Since I have an associates and i wanted to go for a Bachelors majoring in Public health or even Education, does this means i would have just two more years of school? or maybe a semester longer if there were some pre-requisites? I have been accepted at a local school for an LPN program but i hear that New Jersey is now phasing out LPNs and will soon require all nurses to have their RN degrees. But now RN schools would mean i have a long of pre-requisites to complete and then join the long waiting list. This is just time I do not have so im starting to think that maybe going back for a Bachelor's degree might be a smarter choice. I came to this country at 21yrs old, im learning about things as I go and my husband never went to college (although he has a very good job). But i want to make with education so I can show my boys the importance of education so I don't hear them say "daddy didn't do so bad without college and you didn't do so well WITH a college degree!" Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

There is a community college [CC] program in medical insurance billing - that is an area that is always with us. Every health care office, clinic and hospital [medical and dental] has somebody that has to do this. It would probably not require more than 1 year of courses. Here are a couple of NJ CCs that have likely programs: Cumberland County College Vineland, NJ Salem Community College Carneys Point, NJ

Do not waste your time on the LPN program. That time can be spent taking the science prerequisites needed to enter a BSN program for 2 years. NJ is one of the states which will be going to the BSN as entry and right now it will probably be very difficult to find a job if you do not have the BSN. Just check the help wanted ads for the local hospitals and you'll see BSN preferred in almost all of them. Several community colleges where you can pick up the prerequisites may now be linking with a university for easy transfer to the BSN. A few community colleges have also stopped offering their ADN programs and now just offer the general ed and prerequisites for the BSN. LPNs are being and have been phased out in many acute care hospitals in several states including RI, NJ, and PA. Even long term care facilities are going with RNs. http://www.nurse-recruiter.com/articles/article1_20101130.php

If your goal become a RN then you should go for BSN. Most of hospital today require their RN from BSN graduate. ADN become less popular. On other hand you have to consider about the time you're going to spend for BSN. It seems hard but with BSN you have more options to take nurse specialty.

yes that would mean you would have to go back to school for at least two more years. i understand a little about where your coming from that here it is you got your degree but now you cant find a job that wants to hire you. im in the same boat so to speak i graduated months ago and a month before college started back up i had still no job so i spent the month filling out paper work and what not for financial aid and now im finally back taking classes however no degree plan yet. i still need help with finding one i like. 97% of the degrees they offer are ones i could never do, and 2.5% of the degrees i like ive already gotten so its going to take me more than a few years. but since you know what you want and you know a school that offers it so go for it.
