What computer related jobs are in demand right now?

A degree in biology or a degree in computer science?

  • I am a soon to be college freshman who has aspirations to go to medical school in the future. However, right now I am stuck between deciding to major in biology or computer science. I want to major in something other than biology for in case I cannot go to medical school. Although right now, I am liking the idea of majoring in computer science right now because I love computers and also due to the fact of the growing technological influence on the global job market. However, my dreams of becoming a doctor far exceed that of my interests regarding computers. So what do you guys think I should major in? I feel biology will give me a strong background knowledge when it comes to the MCATs and for succeeding in medical school, but a computer science degree will open many doors for me in the future as well. Also, are bio majors in great demand as computer science majors are? Which degrees will generally be more practical in apply for jobs excluding medical prodessions?

  • Answer:

A good "pre-med" Major will both facilitate pre-med courses AND offer good job prospects in case Medical School does not happen. Computer Science very time-intensive and has few common courses with "pre-med" so fails the first criterion. Here are some Majors you should consider that DO facilitate pre-med: Bioprocess Engineering Biological Engineering Chemical/Biochemical Engineering Pharmaceutical Sciences Chemistry (ACS-Certified only) ADDED "pe2008 is wrong" Charlotte W clearly doesn't understand the time investment a CS degree requires. There is almost no overlap with pre-med courses.

COMPUTER SCIENCE. medical schools don't want all biology majors. they accept art majors, engineering majors, all kinds! to be honest, i think they like it better when you have other interests too. you have just as good of a chance to get into medical school with a biology major as you do with a computer science major. (granted that all other varibales remain the same) because as long as you finish all of the prerequisites, have a good overall GPA as well as a science GPA, your major can be anything. being pre-med alone (and no major) comes with a lot of classes. you still have to take all of the bio, chemistry, and physics that will be tested on the mcats, no matter what your major. a major in biology means you would take ADDITIONAL harder courses in biology, but those concepts will NOT be tested on the MCATs. a major in computer science means you would take all the classes a normal computer science major takes PLUS the classes every pre-med at your university takes. pe2008 is wrong. also, don't forget to focus on your experience too. a lot of pre-meds at my university also got their EMT-B or CNA certification and work at hospitals.
