What are the chances of my boyfriend getting into Rutger's pharmacy school?
-
My boyfriend is currently attending Ocean County College to complete the prerequisite courses for Rutger's Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. By the end of Spring 2009, he will have completed all of the required courses. As of right now, he has a GPA of 3.7. He has also been working in a hospital pharmacy as a pharmacy technician for about 3 years. He has great letters of recommendation from pharmacists and teachers. He took the PCAT's and got a 64 as the composite percentile score. He will be taking it again in October. He is in the process of getting his application materials together to hopefully transfer into the First Professional Year of Rutger's Doctor of Pharmacy program. I have heard that this school is very selective, especially with transfer students. His main problems are: 1. He graduated from high school in 2001 and didn't start taking courses at Ocean County College until 2005. (He is 25 now.) 2. He did poorly in high school, because he was not planning on furthering his education at that time. I'm wondering how much his age and high school transcript will weigh him down. I think his current GPA proves that his high school transcript does not reflect his abilities, but I know some schools are very strict. So basically, I'm wondering how great his chances are of being accepted. I know that nobody knows for sure, but I'm just looking for some opinions. Thanks in advance!

Answer:
Admission gets dicy sometimes, but I will try to explain it the best I can. In order to secure a spot in any university program the admissions office looks at a number factors. GPA, letters of reccommendation, and in some cases a personal essay from the applicant. In most cases what a person does in high school is thrown out because its a given that the commitment level is high. Also poor performance in highschool might actually work the the applicants advantage, because it shows real tangible growth, not only in academic settings, but as an over all person who wants to contribute to society. Also it depends on how many apply for a spot in the program. There will by more qualified candidates, but that can be circumvented. When all else fails, before going to sleep, close your eyes and imagine already being accepted into the program. Imagine what your life would be like NOW if you actually got accepted. The interesting thing is that the neural system cannot differentiate between what is real and what is imagined when the eyes are closed... You could also use this technique for anything in your life.
