How to become a corporate or civil lawyer?

Can I become a corporate lawyer with a History degree?

  • I have a 3.7 GPA and I am majoring in History (AA degree), and I want to go to law school. Can I become a corporate lawyer or do I have to major in business?

  • Answer:

yes, you can. For your best chances, you will first need your BA with a good gpa and a good LSAT score. You will want to attend a first tier law school and stay in the 20% of your class (better if top 10%) Summer associate positions are huge so, work your butt off to impress the big law firms. When you graduate, you want to get a position with one of the major law firms and work there for 3-5 years to gain experience. You then stand a good chance to be hired as in-house corporate counsel at a decent company. Start preparing now by interning during the summer at places that look good on your resume and by doing lots of volunteer work.

Apply to law school and if you're accepted, take lots of corporate electives - there are already a lot of requirements. I wound up in a corporation and I had a degree in English and Political Science.

You do NOT need a degree in business. Many lawyers have history degrees and then go to law school.
