Which degree would be better and more valuable?

Which degree title sounds better in your opinion for a IT security professional?

  • Which degree title sounds better in your opinion for a IT security professional? Bachelor of Business Administration in Infrastructure Assurance or Bachelor of Business Administration in Computer Information Systems with Information Assurance & Security Concentration. I am performing a poll for a paper I am writing, and one of these degree titles I am actually working towards. But in my paper I am comparing other institutions who offer similar degrees. In your opinion do you think the curriculum is different for any of those degree titles? Or at least think it should be? Does one sound better than the other if you own that degree and are looking for a IT security job? If you were looking to hire a IT security professional and those were the only two differences, who would you hire? Thank you very much for your time, and all opinions, responses, questions, and your time is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

  • Answer:

I have hired dozens of IT professionals. With few exceptions, the choice of hiring someone for an IT job does not hinge upon the degree. Both degrees you list are bachelors in business administration (BBA). Both have a concentration in an IT oriented discipline. Look at the degrees condensed to this form: - BBA Infrastructure Assurance - BBA Computer Information Systems with Information Assurance & Security Concentration The first uses relatively new terminology in Infrastructure Assurance. The second uses the relatively familiar CIS name with the additional IA and security descriptors. That's all just words. What is the real difference in content between the two degrees. Given that most degrees only have 6-8 classes in the major and both of these majors are computer and security oriented, how much difference can there really be between the two degrees? As a hiring manager, I would be much more influenced by the work experience of the candidates. Lacking experience, the reputation of the university would be more important than the name of the degree. If two candidates with no experience applied for the same job - and their universities were of equal quality reputation, I might consider the grade point average of the two candidates or extracurricular activities or other relevant criteria from the resume. Finally, how the candidates interview - how they interact with others - and their overall professionalism would come into play. All of those factors would be more important to me than the concentration of the BBA degree.
