What are jobs you can get with a political science degree?

What kind of high paying jobs can I get with a Political Science degree?

  • My dream job is either to work for the Environmental Protection Agency or work for the United Nations. Now I don't know what kind of positions they have in each of those organizations (since there are like so many of them!!!) but I do know that I want to work for the government in the future. I am a freshmen in college and I'm confused about what to major in in order for me to get a government job. So far, I have decided to major in Political Science, but will that be enough or do I need to double major with something like Anthropology or Human rights?

  • Answer:

Political Science grads are amongst the lowest paid of all college graduates. Really, this is a degree meant to get you into law school of some other graduate program. Anthropology and Human Rights are just as useless for finding a job. You need to go to grad school. My daughter does have a degree in political science but she double majored with economics. That has turned out to be a powerful combination along with her EMT certification. She has received offers from the state auditor's department and the VA. However, even so, she is in graduate school now and getting a PhD.

I would say definitely double major. Anthropology and Human Rights seem good, but I'd also check out Sociology, Criminal Justice, or any major that has to do with human relations and law. The main thing I would say to major in also, though, would be Business. A lot of politics has to do with business and with a degree in business you'll be qualified for jobs you otherwise wouldn't with only a political science degree. As far as getting a job, if you go to a top school you might land an entry-level job with the EPA or UN, or if you get an amazing internship or do something extremely beneficial and charitable enough to garner national attention. But if none of these sound like you, you'll need a higher level degree or years and years of experience before reaching your dream job.

sure.

Poli sci isn't goig to make you a lot of money by itself, and jobs for organizations like that can be hard to come by. Still shoot for your dreams, but be realistic and have back ups in place that you would still enjoy. Never expect to get high pay working for the government.

I found a fellow Political Science major! I'm in my senior year of the degree and have loved every class. I know many of my peers are minoring (or majoring in some cases) in public administration to go with their PSC degree. That makes sense if you want a job in the EPA. I'm probably going to continue my education in grad school. I've considered a masters of public administration which would open some doors in local government. I've read of many city managers with MPA's or Masters of Public Policy that make six figure salaries. You're school might have a career services department that might be able to give you some good ideas too. Who knows, maybe they could help you get an internship with a branch of the EPA where you could start making connections. Good Luck--though maybe not too good since we'll be competing for the same jobs someday!
