Agricultural engineering and Bioengineering: what is the difference?

What's the difference between bioengineering and biomedical engineering?

  • I looked up the majors on college board and it said UT at Arlington had a biomedical engineering program but the campus website says it has a bioengineering program? I'm confused....

  • Answer:

There isn't a formal distinction. ABET accredits this type of degree as "Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering." Individual programs can tilt towards either Chemical/Biochemical Engineering or towards Electrical/Mechanical/Materials Engineering, but there's no consistency in title. Incidentally, there is also Biological Engineering, which is different from the above. Biological Engineering is more about Generic Engineering, often leaning to crop/agricultural Engineering.

They are pretty much the same except biomedical has some more computer classes for learning how to program medical equipment. A Bio engineer can get a job as a biomedical engineer and vice versa.
