Question about Bachelors/Masters degree?
-
I am only in High School, but I am looking into what I will pursue in college. I for sure want to do a degree in business. Right now I am looking into International Business or Business Management/Administration. I also am positive that I will want my masters in business. However, my question is, do people usually get the exact same masters degree as they get in their bachelors degree? For example, would I want to do a bachelors in International Business, and a masters in Business Admin? Or should I do it the other way around? Or should I just pick one and do that for both my bachelors and masters degree? What is the smart thing to do/what do most people do?

Answer:
First part: You can get an MBA with any undergraduate major. That's what an MBA is for. It allows people that have studied some particular field to then move into management in that field. It works very well for that purpose. There are different sorts of master's degrees though and the MBA isn't the only one in "business". It would be better for you to worry about which master's degree you want after you've had a couple years of undergrad courses and learned which areas you like most or want to pursue. You could want an MS in Finance for all you know right now. People that have an undergrad in business are usually better off getting their master's (MA, MS, MAcct, etc...) in a specialty and not getting the MBA at all. Second part: If you were to say you wanted to become a teacher and I replied "don't major in teaching because all teachers have a degree in that. They're a dime a dozen." then you might think I'm a bit daft. It would also be really bad advice, if teaching is what you want to do, for me to suggest you not major in that. The same is true of business. Want to know why so many people ('dime a dozen') have a degree in business? It could be because there are a lot of jobs in the business world. In fact, one would have to agree that most businesses are in business. Businesses are "a dime a dozen", there's just about one on every corner and some corners have several. That means there's a high demand for people that know how to conduct business. Even businesses that aren't "in business" (non-profits and governments) conduct business. Heck, people without a job at all do business everyday in their personal lives. There is no more universally 'practical' major than business [my opinion] and if you're good at it, you'll be paid well. Thing is, many business grads aren't very good at it. But that's not about the major, it's about the individuals themselves. Bad engineers or scientists don't make any money either. It's maybe not so helpful a major/degree if you'd like to be a dolphin trainer or a comic book writer or even a physicist or engineer -- unless you'd like to be the manager of those people and write their paycheck for them. What do smart people do - they get the credentials required for the job they'd like to have. That could even mean not going to college at all. Or, it could be a PhD. What do most people do? Most people aren't smart - they do other things and then wonder why they can't find a job. Some even major in their hobby and then try to make a hobby their job - usually with bad results.

Some universities actually PREFER you to have a bachelor's degree in something other than business when it comes to a masters in one
Many masters degrees require you do a bachelors in the same field (science, math, engineering, etc) but MBA is not one of those. You can do it with any bachelors degree and major. You'd be better off getting a major besides business; it will help you find a job. There are a ton of MBAs out there.

I would suggest that you get your MBA in a different major than your undergrad degree, it will make you more marketable. Good luck!
