Whats the first step to take in becoming a paramedic?

For somebody who has just a high school education whats the first step you usually take to becoming a paramedic
-
Answer:
Start by looking at the local community colleges and enroll in an EMT-Basic program. It should be a semester course. After that, work as an EMT for alittle while (it's hard due to low pay) on a private ambo or whatever...trust me it's worth it, you may not do much but it will give you great experience in patient care and dealing with the basics of the job (stretcher handling, ambulance operations, vitals...you'd be surprised, alot of medics who go straight from EMT to medic lack alot of the fundamental skills it takes to be good at the job) Plus...if you have experience as an EMT...it looks good when you apply to medic school. You need 500 hours of EMT-B work just to apply (at least that was the requirement for my medic school)..

A quick and easy way is to go through ROP or a local trade school that offers the programs that teach you the skills and directly places you in the occupation. My brother was an EMT for 3 years and thats what he did. Or you would have to take the necessary requirements at your local college or university.

You used to be able to train on the job as a trainee technician, then you had to work for a year or two as a techy then it was another 3yrs on top of that to become a para. Now you have to take a degree at university, it's best to check out the universities you are interested in applying, they will tell you the entry requirements. Good luck
