Should I become a pastry chef?

What should you major in college if you want to become a pastry chef ?

  • Okay, so i want to become a pastry chef when i get older. I know i should go to a culinary school, but i really wanted to go to DePaul, but they dont have anything of the sort. Is there anything i can Major at any normal college that will help me in the culinary buisness ? (Ex. Buisness)

  • Answer:

If you want to be a pastry chef, why waste your time, money, and energy by going to Depaul? The closest major I can think of is food science and that is still abstract. I think it is a huge mistake to go there if you want to get into food. I would choose one or the other but not both.

Other answers

The closest that DePaul comes to anything culinary is a degree in Hospitality Leadership with an emphasis on Food and Beverage Management, which would be a good degree if you were going to run a restaurant or catering company. See if DePaul will accept classes that you take at a school in Chicago that offers baking and pastry arts classes (e.g. City Colleges of Chicago, Le Cordon Bleu, Triton, etc.)

To be a chef, get a degree in hospitality. The 2-year school I go to offer certificates or an AS degree in Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management.

Business is a good idea if you want to have your own bakery one day.
