What grades do colleges look at?

Do colleges look at your individual grades?

  • I'm a junior and I have an amazingly high GPA because I take lots of AP classes but I messed up on one of my honors classes and ended with a C+ as a final grade. Do colleges look at individual class grades or will they just look at my GPA? Am I in trouble? Most of my Honors grades are B+s and my AP's are A's. I'm applying to colleges like Georgetown, and prestigious ones. Am I in trouble?

  • Answer:

GPA matters as much as actuall letter grades, but it really depends on who your compeating against, and i'm guessing the kids aplying to prestegious collages all have around the same GPA's as you. You should balance it out with a really good SAT score and some other extras that will give you an edge on the competition. I think with the leadership and the community service you should be good. Don't worry about it, you'll get into plenty of collages, and even if the one you wanted to go to the most doesn't accept you, you can always go to a second choice and try to transfer after your sophmore year.

it really depends what class that C+ was in ..it isnt bad you still have to do community service join clubs and sports ......that is just as important as your GPA

Most of them look at your final grades throughout freshmen - senior year. They don't look at term grades. They may also look at your gpa. Some of them vary. I know most colleges look for improvements. If you have mostly B's in junior year and then in senior year you have mostly A's they will love that.

To summarize, yes they do look at individual grades along with your total GPA. This happens because your guidance counselor will send the entire HS transcript to the colleges, meaning all the individual grades you received will show up. You probably won't be in major trouble. A C+ shouldn't be all too crippling. There are other admissions factors in play too such as SAT/ACT scores, Extra-curriculars, and Personal Essay. Don't forget that.

NOT BAD AT ALL...JUST DON'T MAKE IT A HABIT. DON'T GO TO GEORGETOWN ITS TOO EXPENSIVE ANYWAYS... IF YOU ARE APPLYING TO PRESTIGIOUS SCHOOLS I SUGGEST YOU DO SOME HOMESCHOOLING.
