What is NYU like?

Should I go to UChicago or NYU?

  • I got in as a TRANSFER applicant at both schools, and I'll be a sophomore in the fall. I'm having a hard time deciding where to go, and the deadline's coming up soon (actually, the U of C deadline has already passed, but I got an extension). I know that UChicago has a great reputation, but I'm kind of scared of its cutthroat academic environment because I'm kind of a slacker (haha) and I really don't know for sure what I want to major in yet; probably something in the social sciences. Other considerations: -I got into NYU's CAS. -I live about 90 minutes away from NYU, so I can go home quite frequently. -I only have to pay about 27,000 for UChicago, but 45,000 for NYU. -NYU accepted all of my credits, while UChicago only accepted some of them. The others I have to take placement tests for, but I'll still graduate on time. -I don't really like cold weather, but I doubt that this will make or break my decision.

  • Answer:

Chicago is the better school by far. It's not cutthroat if you mean in the sense of competition for grades; the grade summarizes your performance. Being quite a ways from the parents is a plus, not a minus. And it's going to save you $18,000/yr!

nyu

It also depends on what department you are in. If you are studyin sociology or criminology, i know that U Chicago is probably the bst school in the nation for that feild. Both schools have different things to offer in their departments. You should do a little more research and search for the department you will be going to and the proffessors they have there. UChicago is a better school, but both of these school are very great to go to.

university of chicago is the best social science school in the nation. political science, economics, history, pyschology, sociology departments are all very good. nyu is not great for social sciences but is ok. they are deicent for math and physical sciences. they have a really good business school. both are great schools. u chicago is on the top tier and nyu is slightly below the top tier. nyu-closer, convenient, good academics, credits accepted chicago-cheaper, great academics,

Both are excellent schools, but I would suggest NYU. It seems to have more pros then cons - accepted all your credits and it's closer to home. Both are pretty highly competitive schools, both have cold weather. If money's a big factor, then University of Chicago would be the obvious choice.

Jen

you should definatley go to chicago. chicago is 8th in the nation and nyu is 33rd. choose chicago it is a better school for a cheaper price. besisdes chicago is an awesome city. chicago and new york are pretty equal in coldness.

i think it all has to do with how much u want to pay. it sounds like NYU sounds like a more convenient school from what u said, but if ur not willing to pay 45,000 for it, especially in this recession, ur not alone
