What grades in highschool count the most to get into college?

Freshman year in highschool - bad grades. Can I still get into a good college?!?

  • well, bad meaning D's & C's ... can i still get into a pretty good college if i keep my grades up from here on out? help PLEASEEE.

  • Answer:

Obviously it is always best to get high marks from the beginning. But colleges do like to see significant improvement. If you start getting nothing but A's and a few B's consistently it will look really good. Work it into your essay on how you made the change and continue to strive for excellence by maintaining high grades.

Let's assume you got half C's and half D's this year. That means your GPA is a 1.5. You apply to colleges in the fall of senior year. If you get all A's from now on, your highest GPA when applying to colleges would be: (1.5 * 1 + 4.0 * 2) / 3 = 3.17 That's high enough, that with two full years of A's (and they need to include honors and AP courses, not just basic courses) you should be able to get into some decent schools, maybe a few good schools.
