Can I still get into law school?

  • I got a C+ in one of my classes last semester and I am getting straight A's this semester. I am a freshman. Will the C+ ruin my chances of getting into a law school? I am in college. The college is equivalent to the rigor of virginia tech. It is in New York. I might have a 3.5 by the end of the year. Harvard is expensive. I am talking about schools like UVA and William and Mary. I know I can bring up my 3.5 gpa by a significant amount by the end of senior year. I am doing well in my government classes. I am a freshman.     Lot of questions here, Ariel, so I'll take them one at a time! A C+ will not ruin your chances at law school. I was admitted to a number of top law schools with a C+ on my transcript (in biochemistry, my major, no less). Just keep your grades up, and you'll be fine! Harvard is expensive. So is law school in general. UVa and W&M have tuitions that are similar to Harvard's tuition. If you're at 3.5 as a freshman, you can definitely get it up to 3.7 by the end of your junior year (traditionally, those are the last grades you'll receive before you apply). For law school purposes, a girl isn't a minority. In fact, there are more females than males on the planet. In law school, there's a split of about 53/47 - a slight minority, but it won't give you an advantage in admissions. Good luck!

One bad grade will not keep you out of any law school, so long as the rest of your grades are quite strong, and your LSAT is solidly in their range.

According to US News' 2012 Graduate School Rankings your GPA (if 3.5) would let you get into #9 The University of Virginia. The 8 above it require about a 3.6 on up. However, The University of Virginia's minimum LSAT score is 166 on the low end. For a school that would take a 3.5 and 160 you're looking at #23 The University of California at Davis. If you manage to get a 3.7 and 167 you're up at #4 - Columbia. I suggest you work your butt off to get a 3.7 and use all the resources you can (you can find a lot of on-line free LSAT practice tests/questions, and can get cheap used books on Amazon and half.com) and aim to get at least 167. Don't settle for Davis, aim for Columbia. The better your score the more likely you are to get a scholarship, fellowship, and possibly living stipend. Don't worry about one C+. Just keep your overall GPA high. You can get into a great, not good, law school. Just study hard and don't lose sight of your goals. You have the tools you need to get into Columbia, so make it happen! I'm rooting for you!
