Where should I apply to college?

Where should I apply to college?

  • I'm only a freshman in hs but I'm still worried about college. If all you're going to tell me is don't worry about it that won't be very helpful. I have a 90 GPA so far and I mad a vow not to get anything less than an 85 in any subject. I'm a black belt in karate and I'm in science club, renisannce committee, and library club, renisannce is like charity work I live in South Jersey and I wanna be kind of far away but not longer than four hours away from my home where do you think I should apply?

  • Answer:

Rutgers University. (Just don't beat West Va in football - we gotta have a winning team in something :=) Also, you are old enough to start looking for scholarships. Go to www.kolhs.com and look for Community. Then look for scholarships. Many corporations (like also Best Buy, Ronald McDonald House, Cracker Barrel, Comcast cable, Wal-Mart) give scholarships based in part on civic involvement. Take a look at who is offering scholarships, and read the write-up on the winners. Adjust slightly what you are doing now - for instance - do something so the Kiwanis (join their Key Club or Keyettes Club in high school. Once in, run as many projects as you can) or Rotary Clubs will notice you. Both often give scholarships (maybe $1,000 - $2,500) to students who are active in civic affairs in their communities. You might also go to www.ysa.org and sign up for their newsletter. Every so often they announce various scholarships. I have done over 400 hours of research on scholarships from corporations (for my Kiwanis Club). Just presented what I found to our local Key Club. Another thing you might consider - here in Virginia - while in high school you can attend community colleges. You might want to take a class during the summer just to see the difference between high school classes and college classes.

I think it is wounderful that you are looking into your college education so far ahead of time. It sounds like you are very involved and committed to what you do. I would recommend setting up a search area that would cover to the farthest distance you are willing go from your home. Once you have a list of the colleges and/or universities in that area do research into each one. The most important thing I can tell you is to make sure they are accredited. If they are not an accredited institution your degree would basically be worthless.

It really depends on whether or not you want to be at a large university or smaller college and what you want to major in...If you go to a large university, make sure you get to know your professors, and make yourself known...otherwise, you will just be a number in most cases...it's sad but true. Not to shy you away from larger schools...I attended a large university and enjoyed it. Try using a regular search engine, and type in New Jersey colleges and universities, or whatever state you are interested in , and most of the time you will get a list...Find the ones that are in your distance range, research them, and make a list of possible school options. Talk to people...teachers, friends, etc. and find out info about your choices. I wouldn't recommend considering a college just because of the "name". Find a place that best suits you, a place where you can be happy and enjoy your college years...It's good you are starting early, but even if you decide on places to apply, you may change your mind later. I had my school picked out since 9th grade...My senior year, I met a great guy who was already in college, and I followed him. You do crazy things when you're young...lol, but I don't regret it a bit....hope this helps...sorry i couldn't give more info as I am not familiar with your area. Best wishes, and good luck :)
