Transfer from community college?

Is it easy to transfer to a 4 year college from a community college?

  • Instead of going to a 4 year college some people go to a community college. The reason I am asking is that some people who go to community college seem to never graduate and never get the chance to transfer. But some students transfer pretty easily. Does this mean that if you are smart student you can start in a community college and end up graduating Harvard. Is it easier to get accepted out of high school or as a transfer from a community college? (Just wondering)

  • Answer:

I know a lot of people who transferred from community colleges to four-year public schools, like UC Davis or UCLA. I think some community colleges have programs set up with public schools. However, your chances of getting into Harvard or Stanford out of a community college would be VERY LOW. If you are a good enough student to get into one of those schools, apply straight out of high school. Edit: The chance of transferring to an ivy league from any school is very low. Most ivy leagues only accept 20-30 transfer students a year out of hundreds or even thousands of applicants. Many of those students are going to be coming from other top universities. So unless you have other amazing qualities, going to community college is not going to help you transfer to one of these schools.

I don't really think a chance of getting into an ivy league school from a cc is really all that low. They look at your GPA not what school you came from. If you were a sucky student in high school then community college would be your answer, get straight A's there and the world is your oyster. I know plenty of people who got into MIT or Princeton or Harvard just from hard work and determination in a community college. It's also easier to transfer to college from cc because 1) it's not a big shock... the whole college experience and 2) the classes are smaller so you have more one on one time with the teacher, which in the long run you'll understand the course work better. Best of luck.
