How do I become a CPA?

If I get a degree in accounting and become a CPA how can I advance in a career?

  • What other degrees and in what should I get to become say a CFO or be placed in a management position? Based on experience etcetera... Please help. How do people get promoted in work is it hard... is it based on who you know. Experience or what? Thankyou.

  • Answer:

A large percentage of CPA's don't have "a job" - they become professionals and either affiliate with an existing firm or start their own. CFO is a generic term that is widely represented at many levels. There's a huge difference between the requirements to become CFO of the local construction company and CFO of a Fortune 500. If management is your goal then an MBA is probably the route. An MS in Finance or Economics are also good for that path. While the CPA is valuable (especially for self-employed and firm accountants), the CMA is also valuable in that arena. Experience and proven ability are the real keys to advancement. Without both, you don't move no matter who you know. With both, you will know a lot of helpful people as a direct result.

The best degree to get next is an MBA. Promotion is a combination of everything you mentioned.

As you know, the market is harsh right now. New comers have it the worst with this economy. The best approach will be to work with a firm for a few years until things gets in place. I would suggest to also advance your education within this time if you want to shoot for CFO in a good company. Experience and education is the key here
