What are the best colleges/universities to go for a major in journalism?
-
I want to major in journalism when I go to college, but I'm wondering what colleges have the best facilities/staff/training for the journalism major so I can get the best education possible?

Answer:
Columbia and UC Berkeley both have great journalism programs, but they're only for master's students. Some of the best undergrad programs are Northwestern (Medill), USC (Annenberg), and Mizzou. Syracuse (Newhouse) and ASU (Cronkite) as very good as well. It's important to remember that it's not necessary to get a journalism degree to work as a journalist. It's much more important to be involved in student publications, and to have internships and clips. You should choose your college based on other factors besides its journalism program, such as how comfortable you feel there - it doesn't matter how good the school is if it's not right for you. However, schools like the above can be fantastic resources and networking opportunities, especially in a job market like the current one. Best of luck in your college search!

Since, I don't know where you live or your grades, I'm not going to list a bunch of schools. Instead, I'm going to give you some tips on what to do while you're studying journalism. First of all, work for your school newspaper and try to become an editor (which has more responsibility and broader range of experience). In your last year and/or after you graduate from university get an internship at a newspaper, preferably a major newspaper. The experience listed above will help set you apart from the 1000s of people graduating with degrees in journalism every year. But, most of all become an interesting writer! My ex did all of the above and became a columnist at the National Post (a daily Canadian newspaper) shortly after graduating university.
